Golden Jackal Facts | Croatia & Slovenia Wildlife Guide
Named for their reddish-brown hair, golden jackals mate for life and are typically found in pairs in the forests, lowlands and national parks of the north Adriatic Sea. Slovenia has a few hundred golden jackals that call it home, and their numbers are increasing.
With a current European population of approximately 117,000, golden jackals outnumber wolves in Europe by almost 7 to 1. They have expanded their range to include 30 European countries over recent decades.
Jackals are nocturnal animals and their nighttime howls are often the first indication of their presence. Packs are made up of multiple generations of the same family.
