Nat Hab's Electric Safari Vehicle
Our vehicle—among the first of its kind in Africa— is currently operating in the Okavango Delta on Nat Hab's Secluded Botswana and Botswana: Kalahari, the Delta & Beyond safaris, taking our guests deep into the bush for close encounters with abundant wildlife—in near-silence! Check out our video and take a look for yourself.
While the advantage of an electric vehicle is significant for the Earth's climate, it's also a plus for safari-goers, facilitating a quiet context for exploring nature. Not only can we observe animals without the drone of a diesel engine, but you're better able to hear our Expedition Leaders talk about what you are seeing.
This new climate-conscious safari mode started with an existing Toyota Land Cruiser, which was converted from diesel to electric in Johannesburg. The retrofit was finished in Maun, Botswana, where local community members are being trained on solar array maintenance and electric motor repair. Now, with just a few hours at our off-grid solar-powered charging station, our electric 4x4 can travel up to 150 miles, carrying seven guests at a time.
We believe emission-free mobility is the future of environmentally responsible travel. As we produce more electric safari vehicles, we hope to inspire other safari operators to follow, and to create more efficient off-the-grid charging stations powered by renewable energy.
