Sofia Darquea De Witt
Sofia Darquea De Witt
Born and raised in Quito, Ecuador, Sofia has had an immense love of nature and a fascination with flora and fauna since she was a child. As these interests grew, they inspired her to become a certified Galapagos naturalist guide, a role she attained in 1987 following her university graduation with a degree in tourism management in Madrid, Spain. Sofia worked as a naturalist guide in the Galapagos until 2000, when she left to raise her son. She continued to work as a tour leader in the Amazon rain forest. During that time, she co-founded Fundacion Accion Amazonia, a nonprofit created to support the Indigenous communities of the Amazon rain forest. In 2008, Sofia returned to the Galapagos where she works as a naturalist guide and Expedition Leader today. With more than three decades' experience in the Galapagos, Sofia has guided travelers from all over the world, an effort she hopes will help guarantee the conservation and protection of this unique archipelago. When she isn't guiding in the islands, Sofia lives in Quito, where she is vice president of the Association of Naturalist Guides of Galapagos National Park. She enjoys outdoor activities and seeks out places and experiences that bring her close to nature.
