Patrick Maurice 2023
Patrick grew up in the suburbs of Atlanta, Georgia, where his mother nurtured his deep appreciation for nature and wildlife—an essential part of his role as a Nat Hab guide in U.S. national parks. A lifelong birder, his earliest avian memory is witnessing Georgia's first state-record yellow-billed loon at age five. Spending much of his childhood outdoors—hiking Kennesaw Mountain and exploring his backyard creek—he was always connected to the natural world.
At nine, Patrick began taking photos with a small digital Fujifilm camera. His grandfather, a talented photographer, gifted him a Nikon D70 when he was 11, and he has been shooting with Nikon ever since. While he primarily focuses on bird photography, he enjoys all types of nature photography, from wildlife to landscapes and astrophotography, always seeking his next captivating subject.
He chose to pursue a guiding career following a 2012 trip to South Africa, where he met professional wildlife guides. He started leading birding field trips in high school for local and state clubs. Patrick attended the University of Georgia, earning a bachelor's degree in wildlife science in 2021. At UGA, he worked as a trip leader for the Outdoor Recreation Center, leading backpacking trips, and served on the executive board of the Lilly Branch Audubon Society, organizing field trips.
Since 2019, Patrick has been a regular guide at the Biggest Week in American Birding festival in Ohio and has guided at other birding festivals in Southeast Arizona, the Space Coast, and the Rio Grande Valley. He also continues to guide in Georgia for the Georgia Ornithological Society and Birds Georgia. When he’s not traveling, you can find him in his college town of Athens, enjoying a sour beer, playing soccer, or out birding.

What Our Guests Say
Patrick is an excellent leader. He was helpful at all times and went out of his way to help with the identification of birds and mammals, as well as offering advice about photography.
Patrick was very knowledgeable, especially about birds. One night he said, 'Let’s go find a badger for the Wisconsin folks,' and we did! He was amazing at spotting all varieties of animals—we saw so many things because he saw them first. He was personable, kind and flexible, and he demonstrated a good sense of humor, often with a twinkle in his eye. Our trip was greatly enhanced because he was one of our guides.
Patrick always treated everyone with patience and kindness and our group had a great time with him! I am amazed at his extensive knowledge of birds. At one point in the trip I was having trouble with my camera and he kindly explained the problem and helped me fix it.
