Maria Marcias
Maria, a biologist hailing from Buenos Aires, Argentina, found her life's calling amid the vastness of the sea. Even in a bustling city, the ocean was her cherished holiday retreat. A transformative whale-watching expedition at age 10 set her life's course. By 15, she penned a cartoon featuring herself as a scientist discovering a novel whale species. Her passion led her to volunteer with the Whale Conservation Institute (ICB), championing the cause of these majestic creatures.
Although Maria's initial journey began with studying biology, she realized that mere research couldn't fully encompass her interest in conservation. Thus, she delved into science communication. Mexico beckoned her with a compelling question for her master’s research: Can encounters with whales increase human environmental consciousness? Discovering the power of interpretation to facilitate this, Maria embraced her true calling as a naturalist guide, enriching traveler's nature experiences while leading snorkeling and diving adventures in Baja. In 2024, Maria began leading gray whale adventures as a Nat Hab Expedition Leader.
Beyond her professional endeavors, Maria finds joy in biking, dancing, birding, freediving and photography. She holds a special fondness for capturing the often-overlooked small marvels of the underwater world, such as nudibranchs and blennies.
