Esterling Alfaro
Esterling was born in Alajuela, Costa Rica, into a family of coffee farmers on the slopes of Barva Volcano. From an early age, he spent his year-end school breaks picking coffee in the shade-grown plantations, where he became fascinated by the birds and mammals that thrived in the lush environment. The distant calls of monkeys echoing through his grandmother’s farm left a lasting impression—one that ultimately inspired his career in tourism and conservation.
Determined to turn his passion into a profession, Esterling earned certification as a naturalist guide and rural tourism expert from the National Learning Institute, complementing his training with in-depth studies in botany, geology, ornithology and history. Since 2003, he has led nature-focused tours across Costa Rica, guiding travelers through the country’s extraordinary ecosystems—from dense rainforests and volcanic highlands to coastal mangroves and cloud forests.
In 2011, Esterling joined Nat Hab, becoming part of an esteemed team of expert guides. He has led groups on signature itineraries such as Costa Rica Explorer and The Jewels of Costa Rica, as well as customized journeys designed to offer immersive, one-of-a-kind experiences. His deep knowledge, keen eye for wildlife and ability to connect travelers with the natural world make him a sought-after guide.
When not leading tours, Esterling enjoys birding, hiking remote trails and spending time with his family.
