Eddy Savage
Eddy Savage
Raised on Vancouver Island and now living in the seaside town of Nanaimo, Eddy has always had a passion for exploring the wild. His love of sharing nature with others drove him to become a naturalist specializing in Canada’s fauna, flora and ecology. As a high school student who had never been camping, Eddy signed up for an outdoor education program where he learned no-trace camping ethics, backpacking and canoeing skills. During this experience, Eddy realized he wanted to spend as much time as possible in the wilderness and among wildlife. Contemplating a plan for his university studies, he stumbled across a pamphlet for a program at North Island College. The program focused on coastal adventure tourism and, as he describes it, set in motion a wild array of experiences and opportunities that led him to where he is today. Something flipped the lights on, and he was hooked!
Eddy has led multi-day nature expeditions since 2008 on land and via sea kayak, canoe, small boat, expedition ship and sailboat, always focused on wildlife and wild places. He is proud to be a long-tenured grizzly bear viewing guide in Canada's Great Bear Rainforest, and credits his time studying these animals with further pushing him to focus his career on nature-based travel.
As a Nat Hab Expedition Leader since 2016, Eddy has led Photo Expeditions to Churchill, Haida Gwaii, Greenland, Iceland and China. Pairing photography with his passion for nature and wildlife, Eddy brings a strong and varied background to his Photo Expeditions. "Spending months of the year sitting in a small boat on a cloudy day in the pouring rain and trying to photograph grizzly bears with a dark forested background, you learn a thing or two about how to get the most out of your camera equipment," he says. For as long as he has been guiding, Eddy has written nature-focused articles and published his photography in print and online. From the Arctic tundra to the rainforest, Eddy enthusiastically shares his knowledge, experience and photography skills with travelers from around the world.

What Our Guests Say
Knowledgeable, fun-loving, kindhearted, flexible, caring, adaptable, attentive to details, a problem-solver, inquisitive and an environmentalist are just a few of the adjectives that best describe our Expedition Leader. Eddy enthusiastically shared his love for the Arctic. Everyday was filled with wonderful experiences and incredible surprises! Eddy is so well-liked and respected by the Churchill community.
Eddy was marvelous! His knowledge and enthusiasm were great and so infectious. He was very, very well organized and helpful. I could not have taken the pictures I did without his superb help in getting me set up for extreme temperature shooting. The icing on the cake was the incredible pictures he gave to us at the farewell dinner that included a picture of myself jumping up in front of the northern lights.
Eddy was the best Expedition Leader I have had in 24 years of travel. He had everything planned for the whole trip without any problems. He was on 24/7. Even giving me his warm jacket to wear the whole time. He was kind, and every request was taken care of with no problem for him. He is very professional yet kind and caring. I hope to have him again in the future!
