Gentoo Penguin Facts | Antarctica Wildlife Guide
Closely related to the Adélie and Chinstrap penguins, the Gentoo penguin can be found throughout the islands of Scotia Arc, on the Antarctic Peninsula, and on the cooler, grassy islands of the sub-Antarctic zones. The Gentoo penguin is slightly larger and heavier than the Adélie and Chinstrap, reaching up to 35 inches (90 cm) in height, and its weight varies from 10 to 19 pounds (4.5 to 8.5 kg), depending on gender and time of year. They are the fastest underwater swimming penguins, reaching speeds of 22 miles per hour (36 km). They generally move colony sites from year to year, searching for ice-free surfaces, unlike most other penguin species.Header Credit: Moira Le Patourel
