Jocelyn is a proud Manitoban who loves to explore the wonders of her home province. Winnipeg is her hometown, where hundreds of lakes are within a short drive. Jocelyn’s love for the water and the beauty of the wilderness was nurtured while spending time at her family’s cabin in the boreal forest. Although she relishes the crisp northern winter and its challenges, her heart is on the water. Her interest in people and cultures led her to pursue a degree in sociology at the University of Winnipeg, while teaching swimming lessons and coaching competitive teams in the evenings.
Jocelyn got her first taste of adventure travel spending a summer in East Africa. She sees travel as a powerful tool for getting "boots-on-the-ground" insight into larger issues related to wildlife protection, nature preservation and the welfare of local communities. Recognizing that it is not always easy to understand humans' impact on the environment when we are wrapped up in our daily lives, Jocelyn strives to showcase the transformative power of conservation travel during travelers' encounters with nature.
When Jocelyn arrived in Churchill after a 2-month expedition across Manitoba, she was greeted by beluga whales while canoeing the Churchill River and completely fell in love with the area. She has guided now in Churchill for a number of years, leading beluga whale adventures in the summer by Zodiac and kayak, polar bear tundra expeditions in the fall, and dogsledding excursions all year, substituting a wheeled cart for a sled until the snow falls. The colors of Churchill never cease to amaze her, whether it’s the northern lights above, brilliant wildflowers in the summer, lingering orange sunsets, or ice formations. When she’s not exploring the Canadian North, she’s dreaming of the next chance to get out on the water.
Together, Natural Habitat Adventures and World Wildlife Fund have teamed up to arrange nearly 100 nature travel experiences around the planet, while helping to protect the magnificent places we visit and their wild inhabitants.
