Nat Hab Staff and Expedition Leaders

Alex Mazunga2016

Alex MazungaBotswana Expedition Leader

Alex was born in Botswana’s Chobe region and grew up nomadically with his family, moving along the Linyanti River toward Lake Liambezi in search of fertile land. His childhood was spent outdoors, learning animal tracking, bush survival and the medicinal uses of trees from his father. These experiences ignited his lifelong passion for wildlife and conservation.

In 1999, Alex obtained his professional guiding license and has led safaris across Botswana ever since. He began as a guide in Chobe National Park before advancing to camp manager roles in the Linyanti and Okavango Delta. Guiding remains his true passion, however, and he is highly accomplished at sharing his deep knowledge of the bush, whether by vehicle, boat, mokoro (traditional canoe), or on foot. He particularly enjoys guiding families, aiming to create life-shaping memories for children.

An avid wildlife photographer, Alex’s work won first prize in a global competition and has been showcased internationally in South Africa. He believes guiding and photography contribute to conservation by fostering awareness and appreciation for Africa’s wildlife. He has traveled across Kenya, Namibia, Zambia, and Zimbabwe, with hopes of one day exploring beyond the continent.

What Our Guests Say

Alex was the complete package. He tracked elusive creatures through the delta where he grew up. He knew over 100 birds on sight, found the 'Big 5,' taught us about animal behaviors and even gave an inspiring talk about the history of his country. He had just the right narrative, a great sense of humor and compassion. I couldn't believe every little detail was managed on a precise schedule, from morning drives and high tea to surprise stops and wild dinner locations. Our guide never lost his professional demeanor through drives and dinner conversation, yet he became one of us. I can't imagine a better guide. He's the brand image that sets Nat Hab apart and justifies your price point.

I would give Alex an 11/10. Alex was amazing in every aspect. His knowledge of his craft was impressive! He didn't blink at any question we asked him: he knew every answer. He knew thousands of species, including every animal we saw, be it small and large, diurnal or nocturnal, juvenile or adult, male or female. He knew the sounds and calls each animal made and interpreted their body language. He could tell you what an animal was just based on a description you gave or a sound you tried to mimic. He knew the footprints and how old they were. He knew the scat and how fresh it was and what it meant. He knew "bush language"—calls and behaviors animals used to communicate or warn others. He knew the plants and roots different animals ate and the ones that were helpful to humans. You could tell he always wanted what was best for the animals and acted accordingly. Then there's the fact that he has a great personality, is incredibly helpful and is always prepared. He was well-loved and respected at all the camps we went to. He demonstrated more passion and joy for what he does than anyone I've met. We had great conversations and lots of laughs.

I have traveled quite a bit and have experienced many guides. However, Alex was the best guide I have ever had. I say this because his degree of knowledge was truly outstanding. Not only did he know every animal behavior and could outline exactly what each animal was going to do before they actually did it, but he knew every single bird and could identify all vegetation. To put it simply, he was amazing. He was fun to be with, very attentive and always had our health and safety in mind. He made the trip most enjoyable. He is a definite asset to Nat Hab. You only meet people (or work with people) like this a few times in your lifetime. But when you do you immediately recognize their talents and their contribution.
