Weather & Climate in Baja
Baja is reputedly one of the most cloud-free areas in the world. On still days, of which there are many, a T-shirt and shorts are all you need for strolling on the beach. However, in winter, San Ignacio Lagoon has many faces. It can be quite cold, and the wind, especially if pushed by a Pacific storm, can blow off the bay, turning the water into whitecaps and sculpting the ever-changing dunes.
During these conditions, the boat ride (45 minutes) to and from the whale-viewing area can be cold, wet and bumpy. However, the barrier islands forming the mouth of the lagoon provide protection from Pacific swells, so even in the worst ofweather in some degree by the weather, and safety is always our primary concern.
On the Pacific side of the peninsula, daytime temperatures can reach the 70s, but because of the influence of the Pacific Ocean, temps can sometimes remain cool all day, with fog in the mornings and afternoon winds. Under these conditions, daytime highs might not even reach 60°F. The water temperature in Baja at this time of year generally ranges between 57 and 60°F. Please be prepared for COLD weather during your adventure.
The nights are usually mild but can occasionally dip into the low 40s, requiring warmer clothing, including hats, gloves, warm socks and a heavy sweater or fleece jacket. A waterproof rain jacket (with hood), waterproof rain pants and warm clothing you can layer and take off as the day warms up are essential items to ensure maximum comfort during your stay at San Ignacio Lagoon.
