Eurasian Eagle Owl Facts | Croatia & Slovenia Wildlife Guide
Found living in high alpine areas of Croatia, Eurasian eagle owls are one of the largest of its species living in the country. There are an estimated 1000 breeding pairs living in the wooded forests, mountains and foothills of the Alps.
Recognized by their bright orange eyes and ear tufts, patterned brown feathers and light underparts, an eagle owl’s wingspan can stretch over 6 feet.
Eagle owls communicate with a variety of loud hoots, barks, beak snaps and whistles. Males have a deep resonant call that is always answered by those nearby. A female’s hoot is higher pitched, and they both use both the volume and distance of each other’s hoots to communicate their location and intent.
