The argali is the largest wild sheep in the world, although the Tibetan argali is one of the smaller subspecies. The word “argali” means “sheep” or “ram” in Tibetan.
Females can weigh more than 200 pounds and the males can reach an impressive 350 pounds – surprising in a landscape that requires nimbly moving across mountain slopes. Their size might contribute to their preference for rolling hills and open areas rather than more precipitous cliffs.
They are hunted by Tibetan wolves and snow leopards, and also by human trophy hunters due to their dramatic, curling horns. The numbers of these sheep are dropping across their range.
