Of all of Africa’s fascinating interspecies rivalries, lions and hyenas may take the prize for sheer drama, animosity, and entertainment value. Don’t believe me? Check out this footage shot in South Africa’s Londolozi Private Game Reserve. It is worth watching just to hear the bizarre, beautiful, almost chimp-like distress calls of the hyenas as the dramatic battle unfolds. While you might assume that the lions naturally have the upper hand, it’s amazing how much grief the hyenas manage to unleash upon them before the issue over who actually owns the buffalo carcass is resolved.
