This photo of a standoff between an elephant and a Cape buffalo was taken in South Africa’s Sabi Sabi Private Game Reserve last month. The elephant appears to be shaking its head, which is generally interpreted as a sign of aggression or agitation. The buffalo, though the undisputed underdog in the situation, appears to be standing its ground. While we don’t what precipitated the dustup, Cape buffalo are notoriously cantankerous and are widely regarded as one of the more dangerous animals in Africa, so it’s probably safe to assume who the instigator was.
