Embodying rustic Arctic luxury in Finnish Lapland, Wilderness Hotel Muotka lies along a curve of the Kakslauttanen River amid the vast taiga forest of the Saariselka Fell region. Trails leave from the property directly into Urho Kekkonen National Park. Though the lodge is a mere 30 minutes from Ivalo airport, where the short drive ends the wilderness begins. Our unique accommodations are in Aurora Cabins designed with clear viewing panels in the roof to take in the night sky—and hopefully the northern lights—from the comfort of your bed. The laser-heated glass roof ensures frost-free viewing of the stars and aurora no matter how cold it gets outside. Built of warm wood and featuring decor elements evoking nature, each cabin has a sitting area with modern Scandinavian-style furniture, en suite bathroom and a private sauna. The Restaurant Tuisku offers a modern take on traditional Lappish dishes, using seasonally available local ingredients. In the atmospheric dining room accented with Sami art and reindeer antler chandeliers, sample local specialties like like chanterelle risotto followed by lingonberry parfait and cloudberry sorbet, bringing the wilds of Finland right onto the plate. Muotka's optimal location offers many opportunities to encounter the beauty of an Arctic winter, from dog sledding to snowshoeing to a plunge in the icy river after a hot sauna. And, of course, the aurora borealis frequently delights visitors with its magical light show.
