Ngorongoro Highlands, Tanzania
Enjoy the atmosphere of a bygone era at this colonial-style inn on a 500-acre working coffee plantation. Designed to evoke the ambience of an earlier age, Ngorongoro Farm House provides a peaceful respite on your safari itinerary. Mature trees and lavish gardens provide verdant surroundings, attracting abundant birdlife. Guests stay in individual chalets with high wooden ceilings, spacious verandas, and rustic yet comfortable interior decor. Wooden four-poster beds are draped in gauzy mosquito netting and have cozy duvets to ward off the nighttime chill at elevation. Large bathrooms have a spacious shower, double wash basins and a vanity. Overstuffed armchairs invite relaxing in the adjacent sitting area.
The main lodge, built in classic colonial farmhouse style with white-washed exterior and hand-thatched roof, includes a lounge and dining room with craftsman-style furniture. A large wooden terrace offers expansive views of imposing Oldeani Volcano. Meals are a highlight, featuring locally sourced ingredients including fresh vegetables from the farm’s gardens. Organic coffee, a selection of teas and homemade cakes are served at all hours in the common area. Massage services are offered in a separate bungalow. Each afternoon, a guided walk around the farm and vegetable garden is offered, so guests can learn about the workings of a Tanzanian coffee farm—or wander the paths around the area on your own. Evenings often include dance or cultural presentations by local tribal community members.
