Magashi is a private-access enclave in the northeastern corner of Akagera National Park along the shores of Lake Rwanyakazinga, home to one of Africa’s highest hippo populations, crocodiles and the rare sitatunga antelope. Between twice-daily game drives, the camp offers scenic lake boat rides and catch-and-release fishing, with tilapia and catfish the most common haul.
The camp’s communal areas include a luxurious lounge, dining room, bar, wine cellar, pool, and an expansive viewing deck with fire pit. Traditional Rwandan design and textiles add an ambience of authenticity with decorative screens made from locally sourced bamboo and locally made woven wall hangings, handwoven baskets and pottery.
Six spacious guest tents are built on wooden decks and feature verandas with lake views. Two twins or a king-sized bed feature plush bedding and mosquito nets, and sisal rugs cover natural wood floors. Stone-clad en suite bathrooms include indoor shower, sink and flush toilet, as well as complimentary eco-friendly toiletries.
The entire camp is powered by solar energy, 100% plastic-free and involved in the park’s conservation efforts. As part of the public/private partnership devoted to the restoration of Akagera and its wildlife, Magashi Camp is committed to sustainable ecotourism, with the goal of making the park economically self-sufficient.
Together, Natural Habitat Adventures and World Wildlife Fund have teamed up to arrange nearly 100 nature travel experiences around the planet, while helping to protect the magnificent places we visit and their wild inhabitants.
