Kimondo Migration Camp
Location
Serengeti National Park, Tanzania
Kimondo is a small mobile tented camp that tracks the seasonal migration of wildebeest from the Lamai Wedge and Mara River in winter to the southern Serengeti grasslands in the height of summer. Constructed of wood and canvas in an exotic blend of vintage East African safari style with subtle Moroccan overtones, Kimondo has eight elegant and airy canvas tents, each with a king-size cast-iron bed, leather folding chairs, wooden writing desk, and en suite bathroom with flush toilet and safari-style shower and private veranda. The central area features a spacious lounge with wooden daybeds, plush cushions and a common dining tent. Before or after dinner, guests can reminisce about the day’s sightings over drinks around the campfire.
From July through October, the camp is based in the Lamai Wedge in the northern Serengeti bordering the Mara River, ideally situated for viewing the herds of wildebeest and zebra that cross the river here. Guests may also visit the local Kuria village to buy handicrafts and learn about the local culture. From December through March, Kimondo Camp relocates to the Kusini region on the short-grass plains of the southern Serengeti. Here, the wildebeest congregate to drop their offspring, which attracts an array of predators including large felines and hyenas and that prey on the young and vulnerable members of the herds. Twice-daily game drives are offered, while full-day excursions with picnic lunches in the bush are also an option.
