Hotel Highland
Location
Hrauneyjar, Iceland
Located at the edge of Iceland’s most active and expansive volcanic area, Hotel Highland is the last outpost before entering the rugged and remote highlands, known for dramatic landscapes, glaciers, geothermal activity and sprawling lava fields. Its isolation and dark skies increase the likelihood of seeing the northern lights when they appear on cloudless nights, once darkness returns by late summer. The hotel features intimate gathering spaces with contemporary tables and chairs. A sauna is also on the premises. Cozy guest rooms have two twin beds that can be joined to create a shared single, a writing desk and chair, en suite bathrooms, and large windows that look out onto the tundra landscape. An on-site restaurant serves a bountiful breakfast buffet with skyr, a traditional Icelandic yogurt, various breads, butter, eggs and assorted meats. Incorporating geothermal heating and waste reduction, the hotel is committed to protecting the environment and conserving resources.
