San Juan de la Isla
Location
Isla Ometepe, Nicaragua
San Juan de la Isla enjoys a lakefront location on Santo Domingo Beach with magnificent views of Isla Ometepe’s towering volcanoes, the active Volcán Concepción, and Volcán Maderas, draped in misty cloud forest. Offering exceptional comfort and privacy, the lodge provides varied accommodations in colonial hacienda rooms, individual bungalows and log cabins set along the beach. The century-old Spanish colonial hacienda house has been restored and serves guests as the lodge’s restaurant. Guests enjoy authentic campesino atmosphere on a 160-acre working farm that includes tropical fruit tree plantations and precious hardwood trees. The haunting call of the howler monkey often reverberates throughout the estate, as troops of monkeys take advantage of the property’s numerous fruit trees. A host of beautiful birds, both resident and migrant, also populates the grounds, favoring the thousands of century-old Spanish cedar trees. The clear waters of Lake Nicaragua that lap the beach are home to more than 45 species of freshwater fish. The village of Altagracia, with its historic statues and quaint church, is a short walk or bike ride or walk from the lodge.
