Lewa & Borana Wildlife Conservancies, Kenya

Named for the native Boran cattle raised in the surrounding grasslands, Borana Lodge lies within an expansive conservation area dedicated to preserving the environment and the wildlife that inhabits it. The lodge offers panoramic views over the Samangua Valley and Lewa Plains to the Ngare Ndare Forest and snow-topped Mount Kenya beyond. Here at 6,000 feet above sea level, nights are cool and free from malarial mosquitos. The grandfather of Borana's present-day owners fell in love with the wild, soul-enriching isolation of this land, and his descendants, the Dyer family, seek to perpetuate that sense of wonder and seclusion while ensuring that lodge guests enjoy the ultimate in luxury and comfort.

Designed in harmony with its environment, the lodge is constructed from local, sustainable building materials. Eight thatched cottages are well secluded from one another and enjoy private views of the valley below from bedroom, bathroom and outdoor veranda. Cottages have either large double beds or two large twin beds, plus a wood-burning fireplace to enhance the warm and romantic atmosphere. 

All areas of the lodge overlook a lake that is a popular watering hole for local animals, so there is constant activity for guests to observe—even from the infinity pool as you're enjoying a swim. Or take a guide and walk down to the dam to enjoy a close-up view of elephants swimming! The lodge grounds offer plenty of opportunities for relaxing: admire the gardens with largely indigenous plants and flowers arranged to showcase complementary colors and aromas, sit around the open fireplace as you watch animals meander by, or step in to the spa for some post-safari pampering. In the dining room, sample fresh produce grown on the ranch, fresh juice from the Borana orchards, and wines from around the world. In the sitting room, sofas and armchairs surround a huge open fireplace while picture windows provide a vista of the plains below.

Guests at Borana can choose from an array of activities. In addition to classic game drives, choose a horseback or mountain bike safari for something different, try your hand at fishing, opt for an aerial view on a helicopter flightseeing excursions, or visit a local village or school.
