Robert, who is better known as Bob, was born in Chicago but didn’t stay there long. Ever since Bob could crawl he was drawn to the natural world, and shortly after graduating college with a forestry degree he headed west. He never looked back, spending summers as a lead wilderness ranger for the U.S. Forest Service on the north face of Oregon’s Mt. Hood, then heading south for winters at the McMurdo Station in Antarctica working for the U.S. Antarctic Program.

During his northern summers Bob lived with a backpack on his back and a cross-cut saw in his hands on the trail systems of the Pacific Northwest’s temperate rain forest. In 2004 he decided to share the experiences and knowledge gained during his four seasons with the U.S. Antarctic Program by joining expedition ships as a guide and interpreter lecturing about geology and glaciology. He’s been rolling through the Drake Passage and exploring the Antarctic Peninsula ever since. Bob has also worked many seasons in Svalbard in the High Arctic and has experience in Scoresby Sound in East Greenland, as well as Iceland. He’s one of few individuals who can say they’ve stood on their head at both the north and south poles.

While incredibly comfortable in polar and forested ecosystems, Bob has traveled to Central and South America, New Zealand, Australia, Indonesia, Canada, Alaska, Norway, England and Scotland. Most recently, he has been exploring the canyonlands of the Southwest, where he has found a new love and appreciation for ancient anthropology in the natural world. When not formally guiding, Bob continues exploring and resides in the Rocky Mountains near Aspen, Colorado, spending his time hiking, fly fishing, camping and whitewater rafting.
