Golden eagles escaped the extinction suffered by other species in Switzerland at the turn of the 20th century, but just barely. Golden eagles can carry up to eight pounds during flight and can fly up to 80 miles per hour, with an average speed of 28-32 miles per hour. On a dive, golden eagles may even reach 200 miles per hour!
Golden eagles mostly live solitary lives or with a monogamous partner. They do not use vocalizations, except during breeding season. When defending their territory, they use undulating flight versus sound.
Pairs of eagles often hunt together, one chasing the prey to exhaustion, and the other swooping in for the kill. They eat the prey immediately. When breeding, female golden eagles primarily take care of incubation, though males will take on some of the responsibility. The female also broods the chicks for much of the time for 45 days after hatching.
Together, Natural Habitat Adventures and World Wildlife Fund have teamed up to arrange nearly 100 nature travel experiences around the planet, while helping to protect the magnificent places we visit and their wild inhabitants.
