Tortilis Camp lies on the edge of Amboseli National Park with views of the soaring snow-capped peak of Mount Kilimanjaro. Seventeen thatch-roofed tents boast stone verandas with comfy chairs. All have private bathrooms and are decorated “Maasai style.” Here, the famed habituated herds of elephants are known for both the size of the individual elephants and their tusks. There are also lions, a high concentration of hyenas, cape buffalo, waterbuck and serval, among many others. Excellent birding abounds with 400species, including flamingos, a variety of waders and one weaver bird specific to Amboseli.
Maasai-guided nature walks provide a glimpse into the tribe's fascinating culture, in addition to extensive wildlife drives in the mornings and afternoons, in search of the legendary elephant herds with Kilimanjaro in the background.
