Rattray's on MalaMala
Sabi Sand, South Africa
The Rattray family brings 40 years of experience as purveyors of traditional African hospitality to their luxurious camp at MalaMala Game Reserve within the famed Sabi Sand region. Evoking the gracious ambience of a historic era, the property’s colonial-style decor features fine teak, leather and crystal. Eight luxury suites, or khayas (Zulu for "home"), accommodate up to 16 guests. Each functions as a private home, resplendent with carefully selected furnishings, private verandas overlooking the river, and a private heated plunge pool. Lavish his-and-hers bathrooms in each suite include a claw-footed tub, double shower, radiant floor heating, and a secluded outdoor shower. In-room dining is possible with both indoor and outdoor private dining areas. Individual 24-hour temperature control ensures guests' comfort at all times, with heating, air conditioning and ceiling fans. Amenities in each suite include direct-dial telephones, hairdryers, mini bar, safe, tea- and coffee-making facilities, and optional satellite TV, DVD player, and laptop with wireless Internet access.
Facilities shared by all camp guests include a meticulously appointed library containing rare books and works of art, an elegant air-conditioned dining room, and a historic bar featuring photographs of the area’s early pioneers. Outstanding meals are also served on the spacious wooden deck, which offers a superb game-viewing experience in itself. A fully stocked wine cellar houses a selection of fine South African wines to complement the dining experience. A large infinity pool provides views across the river, and guests can stay in shape on the gym equipment in the small fitness facility, which also includes a steam room. Massage service is available on request.
