Built as a private home in 1889, Pen-y-bryn Lodge sits atop South Hill, one of Oamaru’s most sought-after districts. The single-story timber residence with five elegant rooms hold true to its Victorian heritage while providing the all the comforts and amenities of a modern luxury lodge. The home is filled with antiques and furnishings that date back to the original owners, plus pieces left the second family who owned the house from 1923 to 1994—including a competition-size billiards table. High ceilings, tall windows, stained glass accents and ornate English oak woodwork and flooring are found throughout the lodge. Each guest room is distinct and spacious with an en suite bathroom, sitting space and original artwork.
Dining is a highlight of any visit to Pen-y-bryn, where guests share elegant meals at a long table next to the fireplace. The lodge is a member of both the Slow Food movement and the Chaine des Rotisseurs, taking pride in serving seasonal, local and healthful foods. Much of the produce comes from their own garden, and what the hosts cannot grow on site, they source from local and sustainable farms.
