Ngaga Camp

Location
Odzala-Kokoua National Park, Republic of the Congo

Ngaga Camp rests in a glade in the heart of pristine rainforest above the Ngaga Stream, within the home ranges of several lowland gorilla groups. Located in the Ndzehi Forest on the western boundary of Odzala-Kokoua National Park, the camp's six thatched chalets are raised on stilts with views into the surrounding canopy. The dining room, lounge and bar area are all on raised decks at the crest of the glade looking into and above the primary rainforest. Camp buildings are constructed from natural materials including locally woven raffia palm panels. A star deck and fire pit are placed on a dropped deck below the main area for after-dinner relaxation while a separate deck is located at a natural swimming spot on the Ngaga Stream below camp.

Western lowland gorillas are the main wildlife focus at Ngaga Camp, and two groups are tracked on foot from the camp itself. Other primates such as crowned and moustached monkeys are also encountered in the forest, while chimpanzees are often heard and occasionally seen. Various forest duikers are common as well as some spectacular forest birds such as the very large black-casqued wattled hornbill, the great blue turaco and a host of others. Birding walks and night walks are possible for interested guests. Night walks may reveal rarely seen creatures such as the central potto, a tiny nocturnal primate, or one of the minute galago species.
