Authentic Hawaiian ambience pervades Ka’awa Loa Plantation, a guesthouse and small-scale coffee farm and fruit plantation located in the heart of the Kona coffee region on the island of Hawaii. The 5-acre estate enjoys tropical surroundings at an elevation of 1,200 feet directly above Kealakekua Bay. The inn, which has the personalized feel of a private estate, offers a variety of accommodations with no two rooms alike. All rooms, however, feature classic tailored furniture, fine bed linens, gleaming hardwood floors and windows that open onto lavish views of the gardens or distant ocean. A sweeping veranda in traditional Hawaiian plantation style runs the length of the house, with inviting rocking chairs from which to enjoy tropical breezes and soothing views.
Each morning guests breakfast featuring fresh fruit grown on the plantation, and, of course, plenty of 100% Kona coffee. Current producing crops on the estate include bananas, mangos, papayas, coconuts, avocados, passion fruit, dragon fruit, white pineapple and Kona coffee. A newly planted orchard will add oranges, tangerines, grapefruit, lemons, limes, star fruit, lichee, breadfruit, Hawaiian noni and jaboticaba. The owners hope to add vanilla, cocoa and bamboo for the future.
In the Hawaiian language, ka’awa is a sacred root used in ceremonies. Ka’awa Loa translates literally as “the long roots,” and is the name held by the neighboring apua’a (land divide), where the people from makai (the sea) and the people from mauka (the mountains) came together to trade, socialize, rest, and share Aloha. Ka’awa Loa Plantation proudly continues this tradition today.
Please note: All rooms at this lovely accommodation have a private toilet and sink, but some of the rooms will share the use of outdoor lava rock showers... a true Hawaiian experience!
