This intimate expedition camp with just eight Meru-style tents sits camouflaged deep inside the rugged Kaokoland expanse of northwest Namibia—and it’s exclusively ours during our visit to the Hoanib Valley and the vast Palmwag Concession. This is a region of rugged mountains, towering sand dunes and expansive arid plains that ishome to nomadic Himba settlements and unique desert-adapted elephant, giraffe, lion, black rhino, mountain zebra and oryx. The small, traditional safari camp is a joint venture between the local communities and the Giraffe Conservation Foundation, the world’s only Africa-wide giraffe conservation organization. Located in a hidden enclave inside the pristine Sesfontein Community Conservancy, it lies just outside the Palmwag Concession and within view of the ephemeral Hanib River. You’ll feel protected from the harsh elements as you tuck into the camp's rustic charm. Comfortable spaces are well-appointed with dark wood and iron campaign furniture, Oriental rugs and lantern lit under dark and starry nights. Each tent has an en suite bathroom and flush toilet, plus a bucket shower. Dine al fresco with white table cloths and candlelight, then share your tales around the camp's crackling central campfire.
