Our stay in the restored fishing hamlet of Battle Harbour offers a unique immersion in the maritime history of Newfoundland and Labrador. The 200-year-old Merchant Building is a restored two-story wooden structure with a wraparound porch that once served a central hub for the mercantile operations of Battle Island’s commercial fishing operation. Fully restored, the building today is an inn that blends modern conveniences with historic touches, such as tables made from barrels and mariner-themed artifacts. A lounge with a bar and comfortable chairs doubles as a small live music venue, while the bright and airy dining room serves gourmet meals featuring freshly caught fish, homemade bread and English-inspired desserts.
Spacious guest rooms celebrate accoutrements of the past, featuring wide plank floors, wainscoting, en suite bathrooms with clawfoot tubs and pedestal sinks, and handmade quilts atop beds with classic wooden frames. Artwork depicting island scenes adorns the walls. With simple wooden furniture, windows framing surrounding nature and hardwood floors, rooms are comfortable and welcoming.
